“Design 1” will focus on a range of theoretical and practical skills delivered in the studio and on site visits to theatres and production facilities. Students’ practical work will be mainly individual, whilst theory will be explored through group seminars and lectures. The fortnight will focus around a scale model box design project.
The course will explore how designers respond to a brief and originate ideas and how the cycle of critical analysis and development leads to a finished design.

Lectures will cover:
- “Page to stage” - the journey through the production process- Designing processes- Research skills- Models and tech drawing. Why we do them, what they are for, how they work
- History of dramatic forms and playing spaces. - Stage technologies and terminology- Modern theatre types and seating conventions. - Spatial relations and sight-lines.-Audience / performance dynamic
Practical skills will include:
- Working at scale- Model making- Model painting-Technical drawing-Introduction to CAD
Site visits will cover:
- Stage technologies and terminology-Sight-lines and auditoria -Scenic art, carpentry and props

Design 1 can be taken with Design 2 in a single 4 week block , or as part of the full Scenehouse Programme.
During the fortnight there will be the opportunity for visits to see new work followed by group discussion.
